Long-Term Complications of DVT (POST THROMBOTIC SYNDROME)
A complication that may occur with DVTs is termed post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). PTS is long-term swelling and pain, usually accompanied by skin color changes that persist at the DVT site even if the DVT is gone. PTS may occur sometimes much later (up to 2 years) after the DVT has gone.
Post thrombotic sysndrome(chronic venous insufficiency). This occurs due to damage of deep venous valves . Pt. have daily pain, edema, fatigue, heaviness & venous claudication . In more severe cases patients develop changes in skin colour, difficulties in walking, inability to work or conduct daily activities and open sores in led (called leg ulcers). When PTS develop in patient, it reduces pt’s quality of life.
